
HSBC Bank (Taiwan) Limited, a subsidiary of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, began operations on 1 May 2010 with headquarters in Taipei.
Established in Hong Kong and Shanghai in 1865, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited is the founding and a principal member of the HSBC Group which, with offices in 87 countries and territories is one of the world’s largest banking and financial services organisation. The Chinese “Wayfoong” translates as ‘focus of wealth’ or ‘abundance of remittances’.
HSBC‘s presence in Taiwan dates back to 1885 when The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited appointed an agent. A full-service branch was established in Taipei in 1984. Prior to the acquisition of the business and operations of The Chinese Bank, HSBC had a network of eight branches, providing a full range of insurance, personal, commercial, corporate, private banking and investment services to its customers in Taiwan. In 2007, HSBC acquired one of Taiwan’s leading factoring companies, Chailease Credit Services, and opened a new life insurance company. In March 2008, HSBC acquired the business and operations of The Chinese Bank in Taiwan, which gave HSBC an additional 39 branch licenses, increasing its network at the time five-fold. In 2009, HSBC obtained approval to set up a local subsidiary in Taiwan -- HSBC Bank (Taiwan) Limited , and operated through the locally incorporated entity in May 2010.
Taiwan plays a key role in HSBC’s Greater China platform and is one of HSBC’s key growth markets in Asia. Current network of comprises of 46 outlets, including 29 branches in Greater Taipei area. We also have branches in all the major cities in Taiwan, including Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Changhua, Tainan, and Kaohsiung.
In addition to providing financial services, HSBC in Taiwan continues to expand its Corporate Responsibility programmes. The Bank’s long-term commitment and efforts is highly recorgnised, winning CommonWealth's Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility Award for the second straight year in 2012, with second place in the foreign company category and No.1 amongst international banks in Taiwan. Besides the continuing sponsorship of Guandu Nature Park, the Bank also has a highly successful staff volunteer programme which was launched in 2005. In 2009, the Bank began sponsoring Boyo Welfare Foundation to enhance the education of disadvantaged children in Nantou, encouraging staff involvement in a variety of environmental and community service initiatives.
