Established in Hong Kong in March 1865 and in Shanghai one month later, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited is the founding member of the HSBC Group. The Chinese “Wayfoong” translates as ‘focus of wealth’ or ‘abundance of remittances’.
The bank and its subsidiaries provide a complete range of personal, commercial and corporate banking and related financial services through over 650 branches and offices in 27 countries and territories around the world. The Chairman of the bank is Vincent Cheng, and the Chief Executive Officer in Taiwan is Alistair Currie.
HSBC's presence in Taiwan dates back to 1885 when The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited appointed an agent. A full-service branch was established in Taipei in 1984. Prior to the acquisition of the business and operations of The Chinese Bank, HSBC had a network of eight branches. HSBC provides a full range of insurance, personal, commercial, corporate, private banking and investment services to its customers in Taiwan. In 2007 HSBC acquired one of Taiwan's leading factoring companies, Chailease Credit Services, opened a new life insurance company and is now adding the business and operations of The Chinese Bank to its growing presence in Taiwan.
Taiwan plays a key role in HSBC’s Greater China platform and is one of HSBC’s key growth markets in Asia. The main products and services includes: Corporate and commercial banking, services for small and medium-sized businesses, syndication, treasury and capital markets, trade services, payments and cash management, custody and clearing, credit cards, credit card acquiring, corporate cards, online@hsbc, personal financial services, unit trusts and private banking.
In addition to providing financial services, HSBC continued to expand its Corporate Responsibility programmes. Besides the continuing sponsorship of Guandu Nature Park, the Bank built on the staff volunteer programme launched in 2005, encouraging staff involvement in a wide variety of environmental conservation and community service initiatives.
